WordPress vs. JavaScript integration for Highlighter deployment

Modified on Thu, 10 Aug, 2023 at 5:20 PM

In order to deploy your Schema Markup, you must deploy using one of our integration methods.

If your website is hosted on WordPress, we recommend using our WordPress plugin. If you don't want to use a plugin, you can also integrate using JavaScript.

This article provides a description of both deployment methods as well as the pros and cons of each.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

WordPress

Schema App's WordPress plugin is a preferred integration method due to it's automated capabilities and low page impact. Once the Schema App WordPress plugin has been activated—and markup has been authored through the Editor or Highlighter tools—custom markup should deploy to your site within 24 hours.

Pros

  • Schema Markup is pulled from a cache so does not impact page performance
  • Auto-generates markup for pages, posts, videos, and WooCommerce Products
  • Automates entity linking for Tags and Categories

Cons

  • Caching means changes to markup are not immediately reflected on the site
  • Pulling cached markup from the WordPress server requires a small amount of memory
  • Less durable than JavaScript deployment

JavaScript

If deploying Schema Markup with the JavaScript library, Schema App's Highlighter templates will map HTML elements to Schema.org types and properties on page load, generating and rendering markup dynamically.

Pros

  • Changes to markup are immediately reflected on the site
  • Does not block other browser requests on page load
  • Durable

Cons

  • Impacts First Input Delay
  • Total rendering time can be 5-35ms
  • No auto-generated markup (may require additional Highlighter Templates for full schema coverage)
