New to Schema App? Here are the first 5 things to do after you hit subscribe!

Modified on Wed, 20 Mar at 1:48 PM

So you’ve done your research, and you’ve decided to take the plunge and subscribe to Schema App. The question is, what’s next? Here is a quick rundown of the first few things you should do to get started.

Step 1: Login to Schema App!

Check your inbox, you will have received an email from notifications@schemaapp.com which includes your username and account ID. There are a couple of ways to login. You can go to our website, www.schemaapp.com and use the “User login” button located on the top left of your screen, or you can bookmark https://app.schemaapp.com/login.

Both methods will get you where you need to be, just type in your user information and hit “login”.

Once you’re in, let’s get a few things done right off the bat:

On the homepage you will be able to add a project.

Once your project has been added you can open the Project Settings to specify the URL and deployment method for the website you want to markup.

Good news! The deployment method you choose and even the website you are marking up can be changed if need be. You can review the documentation in the Project Settings or contact support@schemaapp.com if you need some additional guidance.

If you are subscribed to our multi-domain license you can add the additional domains as individual projects using the “New Project” button.

Next we’re going to make sure you have access to the Schema Vocabulary that you need for your business. The Schema App Tools contain the entire schema.org vocabulary but in the interest of making the tools peppy, only the standard vocabulary is automatically loaded without requiring additional action. With a few quick clicks, you can activate the extensions (including pending types).

In the project settings, navigate to the Select Schema Version section and choose the version you prefer. Make sure to save all the changes you've made before leaving the Project Settings.

Note: Project settings do not carry over between projects. If you have a multiple domain plan, you will need to configure the Schema Version for each of those individual Projects or domains.

Step 2: Strategize

We would be lying if we told you that Schema markup is easy. It’s complicated, and though our tool can help ease the difficulty, you’ve still got to do some work before diving in. Have you ever heard the expression, “Prior planning prevents poor performance”? Our Strategy training will help set you up for success on your schema journey, so you’ll want to start here Schema App Training  and this Google Resource to understand exactly what you want to do.

You can also click 'Training' at the top menu bar of the app once you log in.

Step 3: Check out our go-to tools

You’re almost ready to dive in, but it’s important to have tools to help you with your markup. It’s essential to know where to go when you have questions, where to get additional training and even the best ways to test your markup. Here are some of our most used resource.

Schema App Knowledge Base

The content for our Knowledge Base is primarily developed in response to inquiries from customers like you. From how-tos to troubleshooting common errors, this is the place to go to see what those before you wanted to get answered. Reference the Knowledge Base to answer any technical questions you have about our tool and your markup.

Schema App Resources

The “Resources” section on our website contains a wealth of information. This section contains a complete training curriculum, access to the Schema App Knowledge Base, links to helpful tools and links to our Articles, Newsletter, Podcasts, News and Webinars.

This is where you’ll want to go to find specific information. Want to learn about FAQ markup? We’ve got a tutorial for that. Want to watch a webinar about Schema Markup? We’ve got those. Are you interested in learning more about reporting? We’ve got a training section for that too.

? TIP!
You’ll find training on how to mark up specific schema.org types at the bottom of the Schema App Editor training webpage.

Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool Bookmarklet

One of the tools we use daily is the Schema Markup Validator. This provides you with a snapshot of your markup, and the errors or warnings associated with what’s you’ve created. It’s a great way to see what you may be missing, and it even provides search result previews.

Ensure to bookmark the validator to save time.

Google’s Rich Results Test

Another great tool from Google is the Rich Results Testing Tool. It allows you to test your publicly accessible page to see which rich results can be generated by the structured data it contains. Note: this is a beta version. Not all rich result types or error types are supported yet. And, as always, structured data can make you eligible for rich results, but this does not guarantee their appearance in search. That being said, this is still a great tool to use as a review resource for the work you’ve done.

BONUS: Our CSMs have these two websites open at all times when working on schema markup. We’re sure they will prove to be valuable resources for you as well.
  1. Schema.org: your go-to for understanding the vocabulary we use in our tool.
  2. Google’s Developer Documentation for Structured Data: Google’s documentation for everything related to structured data. This includes examples of their different rich results and how to obtain them.

Step 4: Review our Integration Methods

One key thing about our tool is that we integrate directly with your website. Once you set up the integration, your markup will deploy in minutes as you create it. The best part about this? No manual work for you as you never have to touch the JSON-LD. We highly recommend you set up your desired integration before you begin to create your markup.

When logged in, use the menu on the left to find the step-by-step instructions for your integration method of choice. You’ve got lots of options, from simple JavaScript integration, to Google Tag Manager, or even our plugins. Choose what works best for you and your website.

Step 5: Schedule an Onboarding Call

As helpful as online resources are, sometimes it’s nice to speak to a human to help make sure you’re on the right path. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. You can setup a time with our Customer Success Managers for a free 30 minute consulting meeting to help get you started, troubleshoot any issues, or ask any random Schema App questions. We typically use this time to take you through the Editor and to do some markup live with you. That being said, we are here to provide you with the guidance that you need, and we will adapt the conversation to your individual needs.

As an alternative, we’ve also recorded an onboarding video for you to watch at your leisure. It takes 25 minutes and will help you rock your schema.

The intention behind this post is to set you up for success with your schema markup journey. We hope we’ve been able to do that. As with anything new, there is a learning curve, but we are here to help ease this for you as much as possible. With our help you’ll be a schema markup expert in no time.
As always, please reach out to support@schemaapp.com if you have any questions. We are excited to help you!
