Run and read a scoping crawl

Modified on Fri, 6 Nov at 9:24 PM

A scoping crawl is an on-demand Analyzer crawl you run when you want a fresh look at markup opportunities across a site. After it finishes, the Scoping tab groups similar pages into page sets and suggests where schema markup can help next.

You can start these crawls yourself — customers keep self-serve, on-demand crawls. For overall coverage and trend graphs, see How To Use the Schema App Analyzer: Coverage.

When to run a scoping crawl

  • After a major site or markup change, when you want fresh opportunity data
  • During planning, to see which page sets to prioritize
  • Anytime Coverage alone does not answer “where should we implement next?”

Run a scoping crawl

  1. Go to Maintenance > Scoping Reports.
  2. Select New Site.
  3. Enter the website URL.
  4. Select Start Analyzer.
  5. When the crawl completes, select View results. Results open on the Analyzer at /maintenance/analyzer/scoping (Scoping tab).

Crawls are queued and usually begin within about 20 minutes. The header shows the crawl date so you can see how fresh the data is.

Scoping Reports list

Scoping Reports is your list of Analyzer crawls for the account. Typical columns include Site, Status, Date, and Results.

  • Open a finished crawl with View results
  • Delete a crawl you no longer need
  • If the list is empty, you may see No analyzer history yet — start one with New Site

Where did the Trend Report go? Trend reporting now lives in the graphs on the Analyzer results page (Coverage). Old Trend Report bookmarks open the Analyzer.

What “Legacy” means

A Legacy badge means the crawl came from the older Analyzer. Opening it shows the old report (/analyzer/view). Numbers can differ from current Coverage and Scoping. Run New Site when you need current data.

Summary cards

  • Page Set Eligible
  • Pages with Type Suggestions
  • Rich Result Aligned Pages
  • Page Sets
  • Pages Scanned

Page sets table

Similar pages are grouped into page sets. For each set you can review:

  • Suggested schema type
  • Rich result alignment
  • Existing schema markup
  • Pages in Page Set — the main prioritization signal (one template can cover many pages)

Start with larger page sets that have little or no existing markup when you plan Highlighter templates or other implementation work.

Crawl size (10,000-page default)

Analyzer crawls default to 10,000 pages. Results only include pages that were actually crawled, so a 10k crawl cannot report full-site totals for a larger site.

If your site (or URL list) is larger than about 10,000 pages, ask Schema App — support or your CSM — for a larger crawl. Share the primary URL, an approximate page count, and any URL list you want included.
