Modified on Wed, 01 May 2024 at 10:33 AM

This support document explains the process for creating a multi-type data item using the Schema App Editor. Multi-typing is a strategy you can use when an entity is described by more than one type. For example, a Book that is being sold on a website can be accurately described as a Book and a Product. A doctor can be accurate described as a Physician and a Person. Benefits to multi-typing include access to a broader range of properties, and more accurate description of an entity. Be sure that the multi-types you select are accurate!

How To: Multi-Type a Data Item Using the Editor

In this example, we are going to describe a webpage about a book for sale. In this example, the data item should be typed as Book and Product. Using Book is an accurate description and gives us access to properties like "author" and "bookFormat". Using Product ensures the page is eligible for a rich result.

Create a Data Item using one of the Types

In this example, we're creating a Book data item.

Scroll to the "Type" property and add a new field

Click the plus sign to add a new field.

Select the additional Type you want to use from the dropdown list

You can use the "search" functionality to navigate the list more quickly.

Expect the page to refresh as new properties are added

The page will refresh once a Type is selected. Once the page re-loads you should see the additional properties available to you. You shouls also see both Types listed in the title of the data item
