Confirming your Video Content is Ready for Highlighter Markup

Modified on Wed, 02 Mar 2022 at 02:32 PM

The highlighter has the ability to pull details from YouTube and other video platforms and apply these to the relevant schema properties to create video markup, allowing your webpage to be eligible for video-rich results.

To do so successfully, the Schema App Highlighter tool uses an XPath to pull the video's URL to determine its associated properties. In an effort to optimize page speeds, some sites enable a feature that allows the video to be played only when the user selects the video. This essentially hides the URL within the HTML until the select action is taken by someone browsing the site.

While good for page speed optimization, this can negatively impact Schema App's ability to markup video content. In order to retain page speed performance and provide Schema App with the details required to mark up the content, you only need to add a property to the HTML reference. By adding "data-src=URL", you retain the feature that allows videos to play only when selected, while also providing the URL information that Schema App requires.
